The Guam Rail is a small, flightless bird that is found only on the island of Guam. These birds which one were found in plenty in the lush forests of Guam are on the verge of extinction today. There are several factors that contributed to the decimation of this bird – brown tree snakes, pesticides and other non- native elements that have been introduced to this island. Nine out of eleven species of these birds have already become extinct and two species are now being bred in captivity.

Thanks to the Guam Ko’ko Road Race, the public is now more aware of the near extinction of the Ko’ko as evident from the growing number of participants in the Race every year. Today, the Race is a signature event of Guam and attracts visitors from around the world, both Marathon enthusiasts who participate for the thrill of running and conservationists who run for the cause. But for these efforts, the Ko’ko would also have soon gone the way of the Dodo.

The Ekiden Relay Race in Guam:

Ekiden relay is a long distance relay of Japanese origin, which was inspired by Japan’s ancient courier system, which had runners delivering important documents and packages over long distances. The Ekiden Relay has now outgrown the borders of Japan and is now gaining gaining popularity the world over among running enthusiasts.

Days Inn Guam is conveniently located, just 5.2 kilometers away from Governor Joseph Flores Memorial Park, the venue of the Race, and we are proud to host all the runners who visit Guam to show support to the cause of our Ko’ko.
