Guam Tourism being the island’s top industry, the government of Guam has always taken care to give tourists to this beautiful island paradise a holiday that is relaxing as well as safe. With the growing number of tourist attractions, increase in the number of airlines flying in to Guam, and the island turning into a preferred wedding destination, Guam tourism is simply booming. As the number of visitors increase, the hospitable nation has prioritized the safety of its guests and is taking every measure to ensure their well-being and security.A recent measure taken in this regard is a partnership between Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) and the G4S, a global security provider. Following a contract signed in August, visitor safety officers patrol the beaches and busy streets of Tumon everyday. They watch and prevent not just crime, but also perform resue missions along the shoreline of Guam.

Retired Chief of Police Paul Suba who is now the Operations Director of G4S recalls that safety officers have performed around ten rescues since the patrol’s inception.

“We can’t count the number of lives that have been protected from drowning just by their presence,” Suba said. “Because, you know, having lifeguards and the VSOs help parents to pay more attention to their children when they see those folks in the area.”

The safety officers also take a proactive approach to safety. They interact regularly with tourists and urge them to stay safe, give tips on safety and discuss issues such as leaving children unattended. With tourism being the island’s biggest industry, all efforts are on to cultivate the best atmosphere conducive to tourism. With travellers assured of their safety, they can relax more and enjoy their vacation. What’s more, they will carry back nicer stories about Guam to share with friends and thus encourage more travel to Guam.

This measure has been well-received and visitors have been quite expressive about their appreciation of the visitor safety officers. Plans are on to expand the visitor safety officers program beyond Tumon, to other parts of Gam too so that the whole island comes under a safe security net.

So if you had any concerns about safety issues while travelling to Guam, we are sure your fears have been laid to rest. So go on, pack your bags and head for Guam.
